Application should be made to the Department of Justice for the Sex Offenders Register clearance and the Department of Social Development for the Child Protection Register clearance.

However, it takes up to a year after applying to receive our clearance certificates from these government departments.

Why is this the case?

There is an extreme backlog in both departments now that organisations and schools have been sensitised to ensure that they acquire the clearance certificates for their staff and volunteers.

I believe government is currently looking into this and we hope that they will implement far more efficient processes to ensure that the certificates are issued at least within a month of the application.

The main thing is that we actually apply despite the delays so that these departments can get a better handle on the size of their actual workload.
